As many of you know, we are in the process of adopting a child from Haiti. Having been in Port Au Prince last summer, it is hard to believe the devastation that I’m seeing on the television. The good news is, the family I stayed with and many of the missionaries I know there are okay. But we haven’t heard from the MC sisters or the orphanage they run, which was located right in the heart of Port Au Prince.

I thank you for the tweets, texts, and emails many of you have sent offering prayers and asking if we know anything. Sadly, the only thing we are sure of is this: there are more orphans in Haiti today than there were 48 hours ago. Please pray for our son, Wisly, and the many orphans who are in even more desperate need of help.

My friend Louis arrived today. He is from Haiti, and is planning to become a diocesan priest there. He was scheduled to fly to Haiti on Monday, but now everything is up in the air. We made a quick video where he shared what he knows and asks for help. You can view that video here.

Louis works with Sean Forrest in a group called Mission:Haiti. Sean wrote a letter which I include in it’s entirety below. There are lots of great organizations that are helping in Haiti. CRS is one of the best. But if you are open to donating to a smaller organization, I can guarantee you that every penny is going to be used to help Haitian orphans find a home. Here’s the letter from Sean.

Dear Friends,

 

I am sure you are all aware as of the horrible earthquake that has destroyed Port au Prince, Haiti. The number of lives that have been taken is staggering. Our team in Port-Au-Prince is safe by the grace of God and we are hoping to hear from our team in the village soon.  They have reported that the damage is catastrophic. There are many dead in the streets and thousands more buried underneath the rubble. The thought of the people in the hospital that collapsed haunts me greatly but even more so I am worried about the children who must be horrified, especially those who are orphans and the many who will have become orphaned by this.

 

I am begging you for your help. MWTS had planned on bringing children to our orphanage slowly because of our lack of funds but because of what has taken place our orphanage will be filled immediately. We cannot just let the children die in the streets. MWTS needs $150,000 to run a full orphanage for a year and we need vehicles to transport them.  Please help us. If for a moment you see this as a way to capitalize from this event please rip up this letter and never donate to us again. If you know our hearts this is all about saving lives and we ask you to help once again even more generously. I myself with some of the team hope to leave to Haiti to help dig out any survivors we can find in all the debris if we are able to get into the country. Our hearts and our hands are committed to God’s poorest of the poor.

 

I ask you to not only help us yourselves but to reach out to those you know who have money. Do not be afraid to do this! Everyone has someone they know that has someone they know who has a ton of money. Be bold and know that what you are doing is not for you but for God’s children who are desperate in Haiti. I wish I could write more beautifully to win your hearts but this is all I have in me. It is straight from my heart.
